Chapter Six
“What are you doing? You can’t go out there.” Whip put himself between Lexie and the front door.
Frustrated by the lack of action, Lexie flapped her arms. “Are you at least sending someone to investigate? You can’t expect me to hide here while there’s a killer on the prowl, possibly watching my apartment. And... And... What’s wrong with me going out there? So far, the killer has caught the victims at home or at their place of work. I’m safer out there than I am in here.”
Whip didn’t even blink. His expression remained stoic. “It’s two against one and we both say no.” Whip looked at Jonathan for support.
Jonathan shrugged. “Yeah, I’m with Whip. Better stay inside. His group will take care of it.”
Luna purred, “You should call Octavia and even the numbers. Then I can throw in my vote.”
Lexie strode to the window. “You want me to assume you’d cast your vote in my favor, but I get the feeling that might not be the case.”
Luna tilted her head from side to side. “But you could still call Octavia.”
She did. Moments later, Octavia strode out of her bedroom. “Sorry, I tried to arrive the conventional way, but the front door wouldn’t budge.”
“What have you done to my door?” Lexie asked Whip.
“I put a temporary barrier. No one comes in, no one goes out. Like it or not, you’re staying right here. It’s the safest place for you to be.”
“Unless... the killer is the chimney sweep,” Luna suggested. “In which case, he might be waiting to crawl down the chimney and catch us all by surprise.”
They all turned toward the fireplace.
“Oh, wow! This is a new addition,” Octavia remarked. “I thought it would take you ages to organize.”
Lexie frowned. “What do you mean? What do you know about this?”
“Huh?”
“Don’t ‘Huh’ me. I’m the Queen of Huh. When I say Huh, I mean it because I’m all out at sea. In the dark. None the wiser. You, on the other hand, just said the most unconvincing ‘Huh’ I’ve ever heard. What do you know that you’re not telling me but, because you’re my personal assistant, you feel compelled to divulge?”
“Well, since you put it that way...” Octavia bit the edge of her lip.
Lexie could see her personal assistant struggling with her need to keep silent and the governing rules that forced her to always tell Lexie the truth—the conditions the Coven had imposed on her in exchange for reinstating her family’s honor.
Octavia pointed at the chimney. “It’s always been there... I often wondered why it had been boarded up, and that’s the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
Minus some pertinent details. Lexie shook her head. “No, that’s not good enough. You knew I was going to uncover it. Why?”
Octavia looked away and murmured, “I might have heard something or other.”
Lexie stifled the groan she could feel building in the back of her throat.
“Okay. I knew about it but they gave me strict instructions to keep the information to myself.
